Protest!

Today, hundreds of Latino school students here in Las Vegas walked out of class and held a protest march through the city of Las Vegas, in response to the house bill that would crack down on illegal immigration.

Let me start off by saying that I am actually proud of these kids for taking an interest in what is going on around them. For actually paying attention to what the government is doing and for actually taking a stand against something they feel is wrong.

I, however, don't think they properly made their point.

All the protesting aside, they marched chanting 'Mexico'. They waved Mexican flags (some even waved Puerto Rican flags - which makes no sense at all) and as some (a lot) passed my camera made a point of flashing gang signs!

This goes for the weekend protests as well. Although, in the LA protest I did see numerous people with American flags and other red, white and blue on them.

But why, if you are protesting the possibility of being booted from the country, would you do everything in your power to all but shun the country you want to remain in? I do understand the point you are trying to make, but trying to make yourself even more separate from America isn't going to change a lot of minds.

Reaffirming my position on it, I believe in open, yet secure borders. Anyone who wants to come here, should be able to do so - assuming you come through legally and don't have a criminal record (or known ties to terrorism). We have enough criminals here as it is, we don't need those from other countries. I'd even vote for an amnesty for illegals, so that they can apply for a work visa.

I do think, though, that Mexican's, especially those running around waving the Mexican flag, protesting our government's desire to enforce a law, should maybe use there sudden sense of patriotism and work to change their own government. A corrupt government, like the one in Mexico, can only operate if the people allow it to. However, it seems that the people of Mexico (and the government) would rather (see them) flee to America than improve their homeland.

It's almost like the whiney fucks here who threaten to move to Canada every time someone they don't like is elected.

Again, good for the kids for taking an interest and a stand. You're bringing attention to the issue, which is great, even though I don't agree with how you did it.

Because Mexico uses immigration as an escape valve and its the country next door I think they forget sometimes that this is a different contry. There is confusion and a sense, especially in the southwest of we were here first why shouldn't we stay that is buried deep in their identities. That of course was and is the great danger of having let so many of them in. Both countries have made a mistake. And the mistake was made out of self interest and greed. In the case of Mexico throw in carelessness and the cluelessness of the upper classes. People who have nothing are harder to scare, they have less to lose. They come from a country where the government is much more oppresive than what is advertised here onthe other side of the border. They know it can never be as bad here. being able to march around a wave flags must feel downright good. THe last thing Mexico wants is that sense of self returning back home. Its like a wife beater not wanting his wife to feel good about herself. All his leverage is gone. As for teh rest of the immigrant population here, who knows what they are thinking.
I do know that immigration in Mexico is no joke, the irony is that they are much better at controling thier border thna we are.

Hey, Erin, very well stated, and good post! The best one I've read so far. It's good that today's youth are taking an interest in the government and world issues.
I watched some of the coverage on CNN. I didn't really like the idea of some Mexicans waving the Mexican flag, but the ones that waved the U.S. flag, they're okay with me.

If they want to become U.S. citizens and live here legally, sure why not? I don't have any problem if somebody wants to become a U.S. citizen, regardless of what country they come from.
People tend to forget that this country was founded on immigrants that came from Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, China, Japan, Puerto Rico, Russia, etc. after the so called Columbus discovery.
