10-23

That's police speak for 'I've arrived!'

Problem is despite the blizzards, which I will rant about later, I have arrived 12 hours early.

So here I am at Kinko's, wondering where I am going to waste 12 hours with a car full of all my personal belongings...

If I survive the night, I'll write again tomorrow!

Saying Goodbye...

Well, it’s finally rolled around. Tuesday was my last day with Channel 20 here in Springfield. Friday will be my last day in Springfield.

I must say that I have gained a new appreciation for my hometown. I’ve seen her seamy underbelly, her beautiful face, and of course being the capital, her political anus.

I’ve met more people in the past eighteen months then I met in my first 19 years living here. I’ve seen and talked to people at their darkest moments and I’ve been able to share their happiest days.

I think I have experience parts of Springfield that many others, who will live here their entire life, couldn’t even consider experiencing.

While this city may be no Las Vegas or New York, it has a charm. A charm that I have grown attached to, now more than ever. I’ll miss living here and experiencing even more of what the city Lincoln loved has to offer, but I look forward to beginning my new life in a new city.

Hopefully I will get to know and respect her like I have Springfield.

Springfield News

Check back here over the next couple of days before I move. I will be posting some pictures and stories from my time shooting news here in Springfield.

A Shout Out to Photography

I posted this on B-Roll.net, a news photography message board, but I wanted to post it here for those of you who might not have seen it. Besides, I think this might even be a better place for it.

About a month ago I left my full time position as a news photographer. It was out of frustration and anger and self doubt.

Over the month I've come to realize something.

It's true. You don't appericate something till it's gone.

While I continued to work part time, I grew more and more upset at the decision I made. I'd come to realize that I finally found my calling. Something I can actually see myself doing for the rest of my life. I'd origionally took the job just to expand myself as a production shooter. But now I don't think I could ever go back to that.

I've gotten lucky. I've found a new teevee news job and I can get back into it full time. I can assure you that I will never make this mistake again.

Photography is my love, and I am assuming, yours as well. So next time you're at city council or some dumbass press conference, remember what I tell people I meet when they ask my about my craft:

It beats a real job.

I say that because sometimes I feel bad that I get paid for having so much fun while some other poor schmuck is flipping burgers or washing cars.

Yeah, it's got its low points and it can be a total bitch at times, but nothing worth having is easy.

You know, I think the last sentence pretty much sums everything in life up. My mom said this too me on Friday, and of course I scoffed at her (I'm having my own issues now and I didn't really want them justified), but it's so true.

Granted, it's nice to have everything go your way - but you really do appericate things more when you have to work hard for them.

WHY?????

As I am packing for my move to Vegas, I have asked myself this a thousand times.

No, I'm not questioning my decision to take the job. No, I'm not asking why it was almost 50 today (see the posts below this one!). No, I am asking 'why the fucking hell have I kept all this crap?’

I am finding stuff that I haven't seen in years. Why haven't I seen it? Because I don't need it! My basement is beginning to look a lot like Fred Sanford's place. Dead computer parts; papers from when I was in school in Minnesota; papers from when I was in HIGH SCHOOL! What the hell? How did I become such a pack rat?

It tends the raise the bigger question though. Why does anyone keep anything they don't need on a daily basis? My VHS tapes and DVD's are explainable, to a point. However on some of my tapes I have found old episode of Pokemon. I shake my head in wonder at why did I;

A: Tape Pokemon

and

B: Save it and not tape over it.

What about magazines? I have old issues of Readers Digest, ESPN Magazine and Maxim.

Oh, it doesn't stop there! I have found clothing that there is no way I could have worn since I was in grade school. Old catalogs, broken electronics and six year old pay stubs.

I am sure there are a lot of people who are like me. And I think I have figured out why we do it. I think it's got a lot to do with that we are somewhat afraid of what the future may hold for us. So we tend to cling to the security of our pasts. We keep the things from the good parts of our lives, regardless of how pointless they may be, in case the future gives us hardships. Then we can go through our old stuff and remember the good times.

I'm making a pact with myself. I will no longer cling to the past. I've already filled two garbage bags with clothes and other junk I don't need. No, it would be mean to donate these clothes... They're not in good shape... and looking around, I think I have several more garbage bags to go.

Hot Enough For Ya? Part II

Just a follow up. Left work mere minutes ago.

It's 1 outside.

That's ONE. That's ONE degree F. You know, I really wouldn't be suprised if it was 80 on Saturday and there was a tsunami in Lake Michigan.

How does the temp drop 65 degrees in under 48 hours??

What do I care though. Three more weeks and I'll be chillin' in the desert. WOOT!

Hot Enough For Ya?

So I woke up late today and need to run to the local Mobil Super Pantry for smokes and some Diet Pepsi. So I bundled up and went outside.

I immediately began to sweat. I quickly ripped off my coat, stocking cap and sweat shirt and turned to the thermometer attached to the outside of my kitchen window.

60.

So, it’s January 12th and it’s 60 degrees outside. Officially it got to 66 here, twice the normal high. Pretty nice, yet last week it snowed and was barely in the 20’s. Sunday it’s supposed to be 19.

So here’s my question. What the hell is going on? Could this be the global warming the environmentalists have been warning us about? Could this be the result of the United States pulling out of the Kyoto protocol?

I have no idea myself. I’m not a meteorologist, no do I play one on tee-vee. I’m not against the occasional hot January. I just want this wacko weather to make up its mind. In December we had days where all I had to wear to work was my wind breaker. Then there were days when I had to bundle up hard core.

If this is indeed the end of the world as we know it, I wish there would be some sort of official announcement. There is much looting and pillaging I would like to get done before the Earth deep sixes us.

My Anime Blog

Just letting you guys know that I have started an anime blog! I am sure I will do more with it than I have with this one. The address is http://funkdafiedanime.blogspot.com. Check it out!

Up, Up and Away! (Eventually)

For what ever reason, I feel compelled to tell you of my journey to Las Vegas, NV for a job interview. No, I will not bore you with the details of the interview, but rather of the details of my flight.

This was my first flight since 9/11. It’s not that I was scared to fly, but I had no where to go. So this ends up being my first experience with the new and improved screeners. The TSA.

I arrived at St. Louis International Airport the requested two hours prior to my flight. Check in was easy. I had an e-ticket so I was able to use the unmanned kiosk. I then got in line to be screened. The line had about 70 people in it in front of me. TSA had two checkpoints opened.

After about thirty minutes I was able to breeze through security. Amazingly enough once I got through they opened up a third check point. Typical.

So after wasting all that time with TSA I arrived at my gate. It was about 45 minutes prior to boarding and they were still boarding a different flight. No big deal I thought. It became a big deal when that plane was still sitting at the gate when it was time to board. Finally that plane pushed away. The gate attendant told us nothing as we waited for our DC-10 to pull up. It never did. At 3:30, when our flight was supposed to depart we were STILL waiting for a plane. Finally, at about 3:50, the gate lady hopped on the intercom and told us that our flight was cancelled.

So the sixty of us walked down to the American Airlines booth – staffed by only one person – and waited to get a new flight. A second lady eventually showed up and I was booked on a flight that left at 5:00PM.

Once I got on that plane – it left about a half hour late – we arrived at the layover destination of Dallas-Fort Worth. I trekked down the terminal to find that my flight from DFW to Las Vegas was delayed two hours.

To summarize my flight there, after being scheduled to arrive in Las Vegas at 6:50, I arrived at 11:50.

Then there was my flight back. I was running late, having spent the majority of the day with my interviewers. I got there about 43 minutes before the flights scheduled departure time. The little kiosk told me that since I was two minutes late, I would have to check in with a real lady. Again, I was subjected to a line of about 40 people and two AA ladies. Oddly enough the first class line had ten people and six checkers. Go figure.

I finally made my way up to her, getting a little nervous. It was 25 minutes till my flight left and my gate was at the farthest point of the terminal. I checked in with her and she decided to put me on stand-by for a different flight; just in case.

I ran to the security checkpoint to find another large line. However they had five checkpoints open and the line was moving quickly. I arrived at the pre-screener and showed him my boarding pass. He looked at it and ushered me into a sixth line. I thought that he had seen how close I was to my flight and was putting me into a priority line.

Nope. American Airlines had flagged me for extra security. So I removed my shoes and my belt. I walked through the metal detector and it beeped. Apparently my cigarettes were enough to set off the metal detectors. So I got wanded, and patted down. My laptop and shoes got swabbed and tested for explosives. My bags got pawed through.

However, in the TSA’s defense – they were very polite and when I told the lady searching my bags of my flight plight, she hurried and got me on my way quickly. Which was good because the one flight I needed to be delayed, was on time. I hopped on board the 757 with a couple of minutes to spare, gasping and sweating as this fat guy doesn’t do running very well.

All in all it was interesting. From my ordeals with the flights to my extended time with security. That said, I hope you will all learn a lesson from this. Show up those two hours early. It’s a very good suggestion.

Welcome to my blog!

Thanks for visiting my arena of crap and terrible writing! My name is Erin Winking, also known as ewink and this is my blog.

I am a 29+2 year old, year old television news photojournalist from Springfield, Illinois who just got done with a two year bit in Las Vegas and has now, for whatever reason come back to Realtown, America - Tulsa, Oklahoma! I am a huge anime fan as well!

Outside of that I enjoy writing, playing computer games (EVE Online 4tw!) and not updating my website! I am also semi-political, whereas I like to bitch about things, but tend to not do anything else. If you are going to put me in a party, you'd have to consider me a libertarian, even though I am not a member of any political party.

I hope you like my blog! Feel free to drop me a line!
